About this deal

Any fan of theatre, ghost stories, or good art should read this play, but it's even better on-stage. When I eventually saw the play, I was sat next to friends who had already seen it, and I asked them to squeeze my leg before every scary bit.

I saw the production starring Constance Wu and Anna Camp in Los Angeles, and the West End production starting Cheryl. At its outset, the play is a frightening theatrical experience, but one that is also invested in metaphysical questions of belief and our need to project our fears, our loss, our loves, and our frustrations onto a spectral presence. It seems a long way from the audience, and the gaps at the sides are disconcerting; this is another production that would ideally have been staged at the King’s. provides rich opportunities for any drama group wanting to make things go bump in the night - and their audiences scream.

Having been a hit at the Edinburgh festival and touring the UK, Sussex resident Jennifer Irons' one-woman show Yukon Ho! One of my favourite things about this production is the way lighting and sound design is used to immerse the audience. Sam reveals that his work trip was to a rural island where he lost his phone, and was unable to contact Jenny leaving her and daughter Phoebe alone in the house. This play doesn't feel like you need to have a runaway budget to make this production happen and still have fun with it.

Sam, being a sceptic and having been away on a work trip, insists there are more logical explanations for the noises. And I guess I wanted something more, I was hungry for something that actually sort of said something about something. The dialogue does contain some interesting ruminations on why people choose to believe (or not) in the paranormal, on class and on politics, but it does tend towards the wordy at times, with too much telling and too little showing. Joe Absolom: What I enjoy most about touring is the interaction with the audience and bringing a great performance to new people. This is a simple, subtle (A Christmas Carol or horror story it is not) but beautifully written modern play, being little more than four people arguing in a room for a couple of hours, but it was great to re-live the sense of dread that we experienced in the theatre, not knowing what might happen at any moment.
