About this deal

This is the traditional role of the imperial power, because it wishes to consolidate with the least difficulty what it has already taken by violence. One I recommend for any reflective 16-year old, who is thinking about studying an applied science like engineering. All who want to see an end to bloodshed in the Middle East must ensure that any settlement does not contain the seeds of future conflict. Because of the partisan nature of its views, and the quick, witty style of their presentation, it has never been a staple as an academic textbook.

In 1947 in the Journal of the History of Ideas, the philosopher George Boas wrote that, " A History of Western Philosophy errs consistently in this respect. I’ve listened to a Teaching Company ‘Great Ideas In Philosophy’ course which covered all of the philosophers discussed here, and I think Russell does at least as good a job as was done there. To see Russell dismantle Nietzsche as a pathetic, neurotic failure who dreamt of being a military genius but in reality was a sickly and empty person is a real pleasure. And it seems the people finding fault tend to be those nit-picking professional philosophers that envy Russell’s writing style and best-seller status. After all, the long stretch of time that allowed Russell to undertake the tome was granted him by a stay in prison — his crime was distributing pacifist literature during the First World War. In the background of the text, running through every page, is his grappling with the questions: “what is the future for civilization?

The only negative criticism I'd level against it was due to mid-section,which dealt with the relation between state and church in the middle ages. This is not a book that requires either an extensive knowledge of philosophy, nor an extensive knowledge of history to be understood. What he was trying to do was to firmly situate major thinkers in their historical and cultural context, and then explore the ways that history both shapes and is shaped by these thinkers. Written late in life by one of the great contributors to philosophy and logic, who was also a man of deep and abiding liberal principles, it is a unique book.Glad to have it but think it would've been better as an Ebook or Audiobook really, or split into two volumes perhaps? Russell's discussion of Socrates and his relationship to Plato is worth reading the book on its own.

Russell treats with repect the complex issues that have engaged thinkers throughout the millenia even when he clearly disagrees with their conclusions. In seventy-six chapters he traces philosophy from the rise of Greek civilization to the emergence of logical analysis in the twentieth century.

Space-time, he maintains, is now space and time and the idea of a continuum is challenged with the idea of intervals. We therefore need to exercise caution in relying on Russell's methodology, perspectives and conclusions. Nota: A leitura foi feita entre a edição audio em inglês da Audible e a edição em livro em português da Relógio d'Água. Granted, Russell examines each thinker in their socio-historical perspective, but he fails to give credit to the work and creativity of the thinkers as ends in themselves, not particles of a universal human project. The work is divided into three books, each of which is subdivided into chapters; each chapter generally deals with a single philosopher, school of philosophy, or period of time.

The leading British philosopher of the twentieth century, who made major contributions in the areas of logic and epistemology.
