About this deal

Although it's pure fantasy, Bob does ordinary things, like taking sandwiches for his lunch and vacuuming to keep everything clean and tidy. well, that is something that makes my little daughter laugh all the time and urge me to read the book over and over again. But the double page spread in the centre is a BIT MUCH for 3 year olds and because of this, The Man on the Moon cannot be in the bedroom at night-time. As the story progresses, the humorous narrative tells the reader that of course there are no aliens and that Bob is a Moon expert, but the illustrations clearly show aliens on each page - stealing his cake, hiding in a crater, in the bath tub.

Bartram salutes William Joyce with his baroque images of a retro-futuristic everyday world and a smiley-face full moon, as well as his lucid palette of lawn green, clear blue and scarlet.Bob is a wonderful character and the story itself is simplistic enough to engage any child from three years upwards. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins.

I can imagine this story would be wonderful to teach in a Primary setting as there are many directions you could take with the concept of the 'man on the moon' - Space topics, looking at difference and developing visual literacy, among them. Kids will laugh along at this strikingly illustrated tongue-in-cheek tale that comes with 19 space stickers.Squeezing in one more, this time a space-going hero that we have loved right from the very start of this blog. This excellent picture book has enough depth to captivate pupils and is an entertaining storytime choice for Year 1 and 2. Readers will delight in spotting all of the aliens that Bob misses noticing as he goes about his work as the man on the moon.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! Charlotte has always loved the running gag that Bob lives in firm denial of the existence of aliens (despite actually owning an alien dog, and coming into close contact with aliens pretty much every single time he dons a spacesuit). It toured to local schools and venues across the UK in summer 2010, followed by a second national tour in autumn 2011. However, the detailed, period pictures, tell a different story and readers will soon spot the little green men lurking in the background. This book tells the story of Dougal who can't wait to finish his day at work as the next day his holidays start. The dazzling, Norman Rockwell- like, lush coloured images, the dazzling shapes and tongue- in-cheek text add up to a superb picture book. As a picture book, all parents will enjoy reading this story during the daytime or bedtime, the narrative is engaging and the children are fully absorbed in the images.

He knows almost everything there is to know about the moon - but there's something going on behind his back that he hasn't spotted. Spaceman Bob embarks on new space adventures with a disappearing moon, a movie career, clone chaos, a right royal disaster and some heartless robots in this anthology.

I felt it both related to ordinary life (here on Earth) and yet provided some imaginative ideas about a place so far away and only seen (generally) at night. Although at first it doesn't jump out as a 'typical' children's story as the illustrations are of an older style, this is what makes it unique and also what draws the children to it. Another relevant point of inspiration was that I have always suspected that some of my closest friends are not from this planet!
