About this deal

The author becomes an expert at plant identification and knows the trails so well he could navigate them with his eyes closed. Deer Management and Conservation Services (DMCS) offer a range of solutions for property owners across the whole of the UK landscape from mixed arable and woodland, to classic Highland terrain. Many, like Foster, who try to do this acknowledge that we need a disruption of power relations across the living world. Delorme, never quite at home with humans, began living among roe deer (and photographing them) to the point where his infrequent visits to civilization - mostly only his parents' home - became harsh and burdensome for him and he realized his true family were the deer.

A story of extraordinary power and tenderness, showing that intimate relationship with the wild world and the wild self is both possible and vital.

Kempowski (1929–2007), a German novelist and historian, presents a riveting history of the final days of WWII from a predominantly German perspective.

The astonishing, true account of one man's quest to immerse himself in nature and live with wild deer for seven years. We are only glancingly told that he survived hypothermia on several occasions, that he learned to sit with one leg tucked under him to keep the water from impregnating his clothes, that he wore three woollen jumpers.A couple of walkers nod in greeting as they pass, as if it’s customary for a wild deer to snooze in the lap of a human.

An extraordinary first-hand account of wholehearted embracing of the natural world, Delorme's irresistible, enchanting memoir chronicles the seven years he spent living with the deer of the Normandy forest.

At one level the book works as a myth of the Green Man, leaves in his hair, escaping the soul-deadening systems of modern life. In Deer Man, Delorme describes becoming a creature of the forest, working to blend in with the deer, not disrupt them, and living without a tent or sleeping bag. One trusts Delorme enough to follow his lead to safety during a hunt and then shares what the human taught him with other deer!

Though a good deal of the book is about the connection he feels with the deer and the forest, there is also plenty of hard fact here, on roe deer physiognomy and behaviour, on ecology and ecosystems, on how 'forestry' is wrecking wildlife. I enjoyed learning about the lives of roe deer, but would have liked to have learned more about the author’s thoughts and motivations. A unique and powerful window into how far one human is willing to go to understand an animal, Deer Man asks us to never take for granted the flora and fauna of our world, and to work for their protection in whatever ways we can.
