About this deal

Nadine is from an upper class family with artistic roots — her father is a famous conductor — and Riley is from a working class family. All does end well, when the armistice is announced, in a Christmas reunion at Locke Hill, where Purefoy brings the drunken Locke, and Nadine accepts hospitality from Rose. The casualties of war are not only the physical injuries but the mental ones, both on those who fought and those left behind. This story has been told many times in books and on screen, Downton Abbey comes to mind, but My Dear I Wanted to Tell You, does it in a very poignant, personal way. I liked reading her chapters, even though I found her to be ridiculous and vain (though I think that was more due to women of her class in that time).

Since in the book we only really get to see what the couples are like once they've fallen in love, I felt like I didn't really get to connect with them. There were parts that were beautifully written but at other times the choppiness of the narrative became hard to take.Stories like this are important because they remind us that real lives are being lost and real families are being affected long after the current fighting is 'over'. Riley is taken back to the Waveney home and is soon taken under their wing, making friends with the children, Noel and Nadine, and working as an artist's model and assistant for a family friend, painter Sir Alfred Pleasant. All of these women are connected with Riley Purefoy and Peter Locke, out serving in the trenches, and the story looks at the impact of the war on all of these characters regardless of their role in the fight and the way in which it carves out their futures.

Le storie intrecciate di Rose e di Julia e Peter sono indispensabili a rendere pieno un romanzo altrimenti scialbo e da leggere in spiaggia senza troppo impegno. To save time and unnecessary distress to loved ones back home, the army designed a standard postcard for injured men to complete. Did a couple of interesting things, was appropriately gruesome, interesting characters, and some facinating detail about an aspect of the war which I had not previously considered. Riley Purefoy, from a working class background, loves upper class Nadine Waverney despite her mother's disapproval. With the early twentieth century as the period setting for this powerful novel, and with factual places and people within it together with fictitious characters, from its opening pages the story moves towards what we know will be the outbreak of war.

My Dear I Wanted to Tell You’ is a big First World War novel, moving between Ypres, Amiens, London, Paris, Lancashire and Kent to tell of the experiences of women left at home as much as those of men in the trenches. I wanted to tell you, before my telegram arrives, that I was admitted to …… Clearing Station on ………”. And yet My Dear I Wanted to Tell You also attempts to be a romance book, and there precisely it comes to a screeching halt. I found myself wondering why World War II seems to be such a more popular time period as far as historical fiction goes.

At times the writing is exquisite with whole segments being placed together like pieces from a quilt - each whole and perfect but different. I tried it because it was recommended but the title made it sound like very slushy romance - it's not at all. Treated by Gillies, hundreds of soldiers were given hope; faces disfigured in combat were rebuilt over many months to resemble those of men again. He begins to have trouble communicating with Nadine, afraid to tell her real things, but he builds strong loyalties and friendship with comrades, especially his Captain, Peter Locke. This leads you through the reasons the character chooses a certain path causing empathy with each person although there are wince inducing moments. Love is a major theme throughout with all the characters loving one another in different ways, spouses, siblings, friends, homosexual relationships, officer/private, parents, etc. Youthful passion is on their side, but then their loyalty is tested by terrible injury, and even more so by the necessarily imperfect rehabilitation that follows.

It touches on women's impact during wartime, romance, tragedy, the class system, families, art and early reconstructive surgery methods. And now My Dear I Wanted To Tell You, her fourth novel for adults, is set amid the desperation of the first world war.

Would probably have benefited from deciding what it was - literary (less plot, more navel-gazing) or genre (more plot, less navel-gazing) and sticking with it. J'ai adoré ce livre qui raconte avec beaucoup de justesse et de finesse la problématique des classes sociales dans l'Angleterre d'avant guerre. The postcard continues, providing the soldier with a tick box to indicate the severity of his injury. Summary: A World War One love story but also a hugely moving story about the physical and mental scars of the war, both on those who fought and particularly on those left behind.
