About this deal

Note to others, when the instructions say wait a few minutes for maintenance mode to appear, it really does mean a few minutes. In the long term a computer-type hard drive will fail before an AV grade one when fitted to your YouView box. One other thing to note, my HDD was held in place by not only the screws but also a very sticky foam pad.

If you do not have a BT TV subscription but your box is still connected to the internet then updates will still go ahead as you are used to. That helps keep the size down and when this information is only a button press away, that probably won't be too much of a problem to you. I tried to reformat it but it just comes back to the same menu , plus it keeps saying format failed if i try to format the disc and delete the recordings . We own two old Humax PVRs which we have been very pleased with, but for streaming have relied on an Apple TV which whilst excellent lacks easy access to iPlayer and other catchup services. I switched off the box’s power switch, but now when I try to switch it back on there is no power – nothing happens at all. When I cancel my main subscription i will be looking for a Freesat box for the living room and possibly looking at the Manhattan options or other recommendations. Possibly, although the drive from your Mac might not be compatible with the YouView box if it’s built to a different Apple spec.

I’m not sure why all the previous steps failed, but that last method with a cloned drive worked for me.Reset, keeping recordings’ does indeed work for many problems, but if you recast the name as ‘Reset, keeping possibly corrupted recording structure’ you will see what its limitations in your case are.

Is this just what I should expect for a box of this age, or is there anything I should be doing (whether a box reset, or a HD replacement)?Connected drive to computer with a SATA to USB cable and removed the NTFS formatting, try again but still no Maintenance mode. And, yes, once you’ve got to the Maintenance mode screen and selected Software Reset you do have to suffer a few minutes with a blank screen! I do not have a BT subscription so I don't know if my connection is somehow crippled - I doubt it, I'm just looking for an explanation. That's partly down to having an external power brick, so you'll need more space around your plug sockets, and this presumably helps with heat management, as the new box also has no fan, so it's much quieter than the old one. A direct line into your router will mean less buffering and faster playback of catch-up and internet TV channels.

Not everything is there, as you don't get the full palette of Freeview HD broadcast channels, but the main domestic services are. It's slow, the remote needs a hard press to make it work and the TV tuner on the TV is much superior. I think BBC etc have turned their attention to a FreeView Connect alternative which will be included on some new TVs. Had a little difficulty removing the drive due the the sticky pad underneath but, once released, it came out easily. It's here that you'll find a huge range of BT TV subscription content, as well as pay-per-view movies.

The YouView app supports only one box at a time, so you’ll need to head to your iPhone or Android settings and delete the unique number for your old box before firing up the app again and running through the set-up process again. The power on button still worked but the “down” one didn’t, so the maintenance mode prompt never appeared. Note that it does have the catch-up apps and whether you use them or not you will need to be connected to the internet, and this needs to be via a cable as there is no wifi (you can use powerline adaptors or similar if router is not conveniently located). Right everybody at IONIC and Bloggers big thanks for diagnostics to confirm my YouView problem with unit cycling on switch on .
