A general tree feed in Spring will help strengthen the tree and keep the surrounding area free of excess water will help e.g keeping the grass short, plant in full sun position, prune to allow maximum light and air into the canopy. If you have a clay soil consider digging up and mixing the removed earth with 50% compost or well-rotted manure and replant. Some form of windbreak to keep high winds off would be beneficial. Hardy of frost down to -8 degrees centigrade although prolonged frosts may give leave spot a way into the tree.

Hedging plants will have branches that start low to the ground and can be bushes or feathered trees. A bush has a very short central stem/trunk and starts to branch out from that point. A feathered tree has a single central stem/trunk and has side branches on most of it. It could be argued that bush forms have a more dense lower section initially and feathered trees have a more pleasing look. The Red Robin is hardy and will endure frost conditions down to -8°C. It thrives well in fertile, well drained soil. To achieve the best leaf colour and the most flowers, plant in full sun with some shelter. If you have planted large root balled hedging, if your water conditions are correct, it may be the plant reacting to its change of environment and is under a little stress, but once it gets going it should be ok. The plant is generally under stress if the foliage has purple/brown spotting. A cold winter may also cause a more mature plant to be stressed. Hunger: Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. These plants can adapt to a range of soil types but prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with good drainage. Red Robin’ has glossy evergreen leaves all year round, and rich red new foliage. It also produces a froth of small cream flowers from late spring. Once established, this shrub will grow fast, but regular clipping can keep it down to size and also stimulate colourful new shoots. A smaller version called 'Little Red Robin' grows to about 1.5m (5ft) tall.HS)Girth 8-10cm: Half Standard,25-30L pot, around 80-100cm clear trunk and head *30-70cm wide and tall. You can also plant Photinia Red Robin in containers so enabling you to move the tree to your heart's content. Remember that if the pot is too small it will restrict the size of the tree and will require feeding and watering more often than if it was in the ground. Our rule of thumb is the bigger the pot, the less risk you have of damaging or killing the tree. The Photinia Red Robin is very good for topiary and other ornamental uses. INCREASES UPTAKE OF WATER & NUTRIENTS - Plants treated with Rootgrow develop a secondary root system, with the express purpose of seeking out new sources of water and other key nutrients that are required to keep your plants happy and healthy. HS)Girth 5-6cm: Half Standard,15L pot, around 80-100cm clear trunk and head *20-50cm wide and tall.

This attractive Photinia full standard tree is used often for evergreen screening because it is tall, above the fence line and has such attractive foliage and pretty white flowers in late spring, early summer. Photinias require minimal pruning, but will benefit from the occasional trim in spring or summer to promotedense growth and maintain a good overall shape. Vigorous species can be pruned more regularly to keep them within bounds.
