Premium grease and actually decent value. by Anonymous, 2 February 2010, 8 out of 8 people found this review helpful This is great stuff. I bought one of the little tubs a few years ago and it works very well – it’s stiff enough that it’s easy to apply but very very smooth. It definitey seems to last well too – I’ve taken things apart after 6 months use and the grease has still looked great – which didn’t seem to happen before. It’s actually good value even for such a small tub – because you don’t need to replace it so often and because there’s no waste when you apply it. Definitely recommended. Beside this forks often contain a renewable oil, which will be somewhat similar to oil used inside hubs, and manufacturers also will specify a fork lube. Also, some frame couplers specify special fluoro-compound grease, and it's best to follow the instructions or potentially ruin your frame from thread galling.

Internal gear hubs usually use oil, but it's important to use the correct lubricant. Some hubs like the NuVinci hub literally are designed around the special oil they use. For other hub types, the grease doesn't usually matter. The first thing is material. Looking at what Shimano Premium Grease is made of will give you a really good idea of the quality overall. Take a look at the specs above and you should be able to see the material. It’s then up to you to decide if it meets your expectation.Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, For someone who is keen to go fast, an NLGI 00 or 000 grease would be recommended for bearing lubrication. Unfortunately it's not very clear which grease and additives is best, because bicycles are different from lots of other applications in that speeds are quite low, and temperatures not too high. Durability is likely to be important.

Some greases really are special. But in other cases the grease doesn't really matter. Since so many companies just say to use their approved grease, it can be hard to tell apart which applications are really special and which ones don't really matter. We then wanted to get a bit more specific and only look at Shimano products that are listed in the Lubes Cleaning category. Another grease-based product is carbon assembly compound, which typically is grease + silica, which adds friction to enable parts to grip with a lower torque. This is used with carbon fibre parts, which if over-torqued can fracture. Typically, grease is used for either lubricating moving parts or as an assembly aid. The types of grease for these two applications are quite different.Quality is without doubt one of the most important factors that we consider when buying bikes, parts, accessories or clothing. As you’d imagine it’s especially important when buying Lubes Cleaning. Let’s take at a look at the sort of things you can look at when trying to ascertain the quality of Shimano Premium Grease. For most, it is not practical to have multiple different grease types sitting on the shelf. For this kind of user, an NLGI 0, 1 or 2 would be recommended. Grease is simply oil suspended in a mixture of surfactant, soap, or other compounds to keep the oil in place, resulting in more durable, long-lasting lubrication. Common all-purpose grease (such as Park Tool PPL-1 PolyLube™) can be used for a wide variety of applications on a bicycle, although other options may be preferable in certain situations as we will cover below. Grease should be changed when it becomes contaminated with grit and dirt or when the oil in the grease becomes old and dry, which reduces its lubricating properties. Although it may be convenient, and it may work temporarily in a pinch, common household penetrating oil such as WD-40 is not an ideal chain lubricant. Do not regularly rely on penetrating oil for chain lubrication.
